Pros:
- High and Low: The digital control panel lets me choose between several settings, including low and high. These settings work well if I just want to take the chill out of a room in the short term without worrying about efficiency.
- Programmable Mode: I tend to use this mode a little more often than the low/high feature. This mode allows me to enter a desired temperature and let the machine do the rest. I find it’ll usually click on when the thermostat reads a degree or so below the desired temperature, and then turn off when it hits two degrees above it.
- Oscillation: You can choose whether the machine stands still or oscillates to move the air around. I usually keep it still (my dogs freak out when it starts moving for some reason), but it’s nice to have the option.
- Remote: It’s nice to be able to change the settings without having to get up off the couch, although it’s easy to lose! It’s definitely a nice touch, but certainly nothing I’d use to determine whether or not I’d buy a certain heater.
Cons:
- Beeps When Changes are Made: Whenever you use the remote to change the heater’s settings it makes a pretty jarring “beep.” I could see this being a problem if you use it in the bedroom and you need to make a change while your partner’s sleeping. When used in the kitchen or living room, though, the noise isn’t enough to interfere with what you’re doing.
- Fan Doesn’t Run Continuously: This is another problem that might affect people who use it in the room they’re sleeping with. The fan only runs when the heater is going, so it will cycle on and off throughout the night. It’s probably not loud enough to wake you up unless you’re a light sleeper, but it also doesn’t give that nice “white noise” sound that can help you sleep.
Using this heater reminds me of another model I’ve used in the past – the Lasko 758000 Cyclonic Ceramic Heater. They both have similar temperature settings and both oscillate, but they’re not exactly the same. The 758000 has a louver built in that lets you direct the air flow, which is something the 5568 doesn’t have. On the other hand, the 5568 does come with a remote, so there are pluses and minuses with both models.
Having a space heater on hand is a great way to offset some fuel costs, and my Lasko 5568 definitely did its job this winter. The multiple heat settings, programmable thermostat, and oscillation all work together to keep my home warm and comfortable (and my wallet a little thicker). It’s safe, portable, and even comes with a remote. If you’re looking to add a space heater to your home or are thinking of replacing an old one, I would definitely recommend this model.
Price Alert: Right now Amazon.com is offering free shipping and a 36% discount for the Philips Sonicare Essence HX 5351/46 Power Toothbrush. This means their current price is $28.62 cheaper than the usual retail price.
